How Frequency Specific Microcurrent Eases Chronic Pain & Stiffness
By Be The Change Health & Wellness Center | October 14, 2026
A lot of people tell us the same thing after their first visit: they felt well taken care of, and they left feeling revitalized. That matters, because chronic pain and stiffness tend to make you feel the opposite.
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is one of the tools we use at our Columbia, MD office to help calm pain, reduce inflammation, and get you moving better again. Many people notice a shift within 2 to 6 sessions. A short, focused course is common, and then we decide together if you need maintenance or you are good to go.
We’re located in the Columbia Gateway and Town Center area, and we regularly see people coming in from Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Jessup, Savage, and Fulton for a quick drive and a real plan. If long commutes on US-29 or I-95 leave your neck, shoulders, or low back locked up, FSM is worth a look.
What Frequency Specific Microcurrent therapy actually is (and what it isn’t)
FSM uses very low-level electrical current paired with specific frequencies. The goal is to support how tissues calm down and recover, especially when you’re dealing with stubborn pain patterns that keep coming back.
People sometimes lump microcurrent together with cosmetic microcurrent. That’s a different lane. Cosmetic microcurrent focuses on surface-level facial toning. FSM is used for things like soft-tissue irritation, edema, scar-related restriction, and pain that flares when your body is under load.
FSM also feels different than a basic TENS unit. TENS is often stronger and aimed at interrupting pain signals. FSM is usually gentler. Some people barely feel it. Some feel mild tingling or warmth. Either way, we track how you respond and keep the focus on function, like bending, walking, sleeping, or turning your head without guarding.
Quick note: Our FSM sessions are 60 minutes and $65. We do require a nutritional consultation with the doctor before this therapy. If you’re a recurring patient, you can book FSM only. If you’re new, you’ll book a consultation plus FSM. Please call our office to book.
2–6 sessions is where many people start noticing change: the benefits we look for
We’re careful with promises. Bodies are different. But FSM is designed for very practical wins, and those are the same wins people come in asking for when pain has started limiting their day.
Less pain, less guarding, better mobility
A theme we hear across different therapies in our office is relief that feels real, not forced. One person described a session as so relaxing they fell asleep, and also said they felt relief and “much better.” That’s the lane we’re aiming for with FSM too: calm the area down so your body stops bracing.
Lower inflammation and “puffy” tightness
When inflammation or edema is part of the picture, everything feels heavier and tighter. FSM is commonly used with the intention of reducing that stuck, swollen feeling so movement comes back more comfortably.
Support for soft-tissue healing, including scar-related restriction
Scar tissue can leave you feeling “pulled” or limited, even when the surface looks fine. FSM is often chosen because it’s gentle and tissue-focused. We set simple checkpoints so you can tell if it’s helping, like reaching overhead, sitting longer without shifting, or walking without that familiar pinch.
“Great place! I felt well taken care of and left feeling revitalized after treatment.”

How we keep it measurable: A common plan is 4 to 8 visits with a clear functional goal. Think “turn my head driving without pain, ” “get through a workday at the desk with less upper-back burn, ” or “walk the mall at Columbia Town Center without paying for it later.”
Is Frequency Specific Microcurrent treatment a good fit for your kind of pain?
FSM tends to be a great option when pain has gotten sticky. You’ve rested, stretched, maybe even tried other things, and you still feel tight, inflamed, or limited. We often see desk-job neck and upper-back tension, low-back stiffness after long drives on I-95 or US-29, and those weekend-warrior flare-ups that active Columbia families know too well.
It can also be a smart choice when you want something gentle. People who don’t want an aggressive approach often do well here, especially if your nervous system is already on high alert.
Important safety note: FSM is generally low-risk, but it’s not appropriate if you have a pacemaker or certain implanted devices. Active infection can also be a red flag. Bring your questions to the consultation, and we’ll screen you carefully before we start.
What your 60-minute FSM session feels like, plus what to wear
Most people are surprised by how easy FSM feels. This is not a grit-your-teeth session. People often describe our care as relaxing, and that lines up with what we want here: your body settles so healing responses have room to kick in.
Wear comfortable clothing that lets us access the area we’re working on. If you’re coming in around an event at Merriweather Post Pavilion or after a shopping run near Columbia Town Center, keep it simple. Think layers you can adjust easily.
- You might feel mild tingling, warmth, or almost nothing.
- We check in as we go and adjust based on your comfort and response.
- Afterward, we’ll talk about what changed and what we want to see next time.
The part people remember: we listen, we follow up, and we keep it practical
We’ve been here in Columbia for 10 years, and a lot of our patients come from referrals or stick with us long-term. People talk about our team being friendly, about not feeling rushed, and about feeling genuinely cared for. That’s not an accident. We make room for questions, and we take your symptoms seriously.
If follow-up is needed, we do it. One long-time patient put it plainly: when it’s necessary, we check back in. And when someone is dealing with complex health issues, that kind of consistency matters.
“Dr. Afrooz and her staff genuinely care about their patients. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else.”
